Vegan Social Issues
Below is a discussion between a student of the Mucusless Diet and I about the challenge coping with the loss of support from respected mentors and community elders while practicing the Mucusless Diet Healing System (the ORIGINAL Vegan/Plant-based Lifestyle).
How Respected Elders and Mentors May React to the Mucusless Diet Healing System
Written on April 7, 2013 by Tony
Hey, what do you think about this. I have met or heard from a lot of older folks who know me and tell me that they were into the Mucusless Diet in the 1960’s and 70’s, but it didn’t work for them (lack of proper dedication and transition). I also meet a lot of elders that want to discuss the diet with me and say they are also into yoga, some say qigong too, transcendental meditation, as well as better diets, etc. Yet, so many seem to underestimate or under appreciate the level of interest we have in attaining a true higher state.
Many of these individuals give me appreciation and encouragement, yet I also get a feeling of limitation because it’s like they are saying that “I’ve been doing what you are into for years.” Almost as if to tell me they “did it and moved on,” or “they know what I am doing and learned from it.” Yet, I feel what we are into and what we are experiencing with the Mucusless Diet is so much more than that.
Many of them are not mucusless nor did they take the practices up with dedication. Sometimes I feel like saying more, so I may mention how we still overcook greens, etc., or why I do fruit fasts, and then they sometimes kind of put me down saying why a person can’t do all fruits, or why some greens need to be boiled for hours. It just feels kind of limiting and demeaning, even though they say they have “been into this for years.”
I respect the elders in my community tons. Many of these are dads of friends, who acted as “dads” and mentors to me in the absence of my father while he dealt with his own problems. Any thoughts or advice on this issue? I am guessing that I should just be silent on certain things and continue my practice.
It’s a strange kind of support and admiration I get from people around me, as well as messages of limitation and kind of “putting me in my place” as my “mentors.” It’s just tough sometimes taking the pressure of their personal limitations with my youthful interest and dedication, which I feel is serious enough that I will have it my whole life.
Whereas they are in relationships that so not allow them to fully practice these forms of evolution to its highest level, I have entered a face of experience where I will not get into relationships and situations that hinder my highest practice. I appreciate you and brother air, and others, who take these things to there higher levels instead of only being “interested.

Vegan Social Issues: Coping with Criticisms from Respected Mentors
Written on April 8, 2013 by Prof. Spira
I definitely know what you mean about this one. Brother Air and I talk about this kind of thing a lot. Same thing happened to him with his previous mentors. When I got into the diet at age 19, I quickly knew that I had found a very important missing piece for humanity on this EArTh. It wasn’t some gurus from India or Africa, a world renowned physicist, or great Oxford scholar that shared one of the greatest ‘missing keys’ to humankind with me, but some African American musicians from the United States. Thus, to our family and friends it seems inconceivable for us to possess this kind of world-changing knowledge and wisdom. As the saying goes “a prophet is not without honor except in his/her own village.”
When I first got into the diet, I thought that others of all ages would see what I saw in it and just jump right on board with me. It seemed so simple and easy to understand, yet I quickly learned that to be able to truly see, understand, and practice this lifestyle is a gift that only a few are privileged to have at this period in human history.
Black music, particularly jazz, was the spiritual force that set me on this path. In my formative years I went out of my way to spend time with some of the greatest musicians on this planet. And I felt it my duty to give them all a Mucusless Diet book and tell them about the diet, as their music had given so much to me. As I started to talk about the diet, the tables would turn and I would see some of the greatest musical masters turn from teachers to students. T
hey were now being exposed to some of the heaviest and most revolutionary information that they had ever heard. Some of the more advanced ones, like Mulgrew Miller and Curtis Fuller, already knew about the diet. I actually had a very interesting conversation with Curtis about John Coltrane learning of the Mucusless Diet while he was on his death bed. I’ll tell you the full story in the future. I also gave a mucusless diet book to Ornette Coleman who was very pleased to receive it.
After seeing the lifestyles of many of these great musicians, I quickly learned that they do not always live or think on the same level as their illustrious music. Brother Air learned the same thing in the 70s and 80s when he hung with some of the most famous musicians in the world.
Some of the people that promoted images of elevated living and consciousness as a part of their image would live lives behind the scenes that did not live up to the hype (Earth Wind and Fire with their Afro-futuristic image is one example).
Learning to Communicate with Others about the Lifestyle
Vegan Social Issues: Limited Support
Over time I learned how to communicate with others about the mucusless diet, including the great elders that seemed to have all the pieces to humanity’s puzzle except this one. But, I found that just ‘living’ the diet and humbly telling my story(truth) would influence those around me more than I could have imagined.
I often thought that I was talking on deaf ears, but would hear years later that one of them cured an illness or did their first enema. I realized that I would never know when someone was listening and how they would be touched by my message. In the early days I would get the reaction that you are getting from many other elevated souls in your community.
They have the attitude of having “been there,” but most have never really “done that.” They think that they know what we are talking about, but it is a new day with new information and new experiences. 21st century practice of the Mucusless Diet has been elevated to new heights of which they are unaware.
Elders and mentors that have very little egos will recognize the gravity of what you are talking about and support you. They seem to say things like: “I could only take that diet so far, but you go for it young blood.”
I never claim to be bringing the ‘only’ piece of the grand puzzle to the table, but it is a piece that we must all deal with sooner or later. Interestingly, you become an agent of spiritual cleansing for such individuals, as you can see the last bit of suppressed ego come to the surface of some of the most advanced souls. We all have a lot work to do on ourselves, and I have yet to find any exceptions.
The major and fundamental transgression on this EArTh is eating wrongly, and it is one of the most important commonly shared karmic corrections for all of us. I can’t help but view the EArTh as a sort of purgatory for those souls who really wanted to get lost in crEATurdom, i.e. become worldclass EATers. But, some of us are ready to move on to the next level.
Peace, Love, and Breath!
