Fasting Diet

Questions about Fasting
Written by Tony on May 6, 2013
Hey Spira. I have a couple questions about fasting.
1. If I eat a mucus-causing food or something that doesn’t sit right with me, is it healthy or OK to fast immediately, or should I transition for a couple days? Sometimes when I try and gradually transition away from it to eliminate it, I end up going back into the mucus-forming foods. Is that a reasonable way to deal with times when I eat something that’s not a part of my transition?
2. When I fast is it better to just not eat and drink water, or is it better to not eat or drink water and just sip some juice?
3. I heard that transitioning back and forth can cause us to age, whereas continually transitioning upwards with no coming down is the best way to maintain youth and health. If I fast, and then come out the fast and eat mucus-forming foods later, and then go back into deeper transition, is that extremely unhealthy? I saw that in a video with a raw foodist who explained he “aged” more because he was going back and forth too much in the beginning. I feel its because he was trying to be a raw foodie and not dealing with the transition diet of the mucusless system, and therefore probably ate junk we would avoid.
I feel like I’m right on the edge of diving in to more fasting, as fasting is always at the edge for me. It feels great to get through a fast, but truly a no food and little water/juice fast has lasted for a total of only 2 days. I truly want to get in a longer period as I think my body is really begging for it right now. I want to know if I can just jump into a fast ( I know how to balance it and do it mostly) , I just get stuck in trying to transition to a fast and end up eating something uncomfortable, and then I feel I must wait longer to fast. I will be reviewing Rational Fasting and your fasting sections of Spira Speaks over the next few days.

“Rational” Fasting Diet is the Mucusless Diet Healing System
Written by Prof. Spira on May 6, 2013
In general, it is important for people to begin the “transition diet” as described by Arnold Ehret in the Mucusless Diet Healing System before setting out to fast. And then, the fasting should be somewhat short, i.e. two to three days.
In your specific case, it is okay to jump into a shorter fast now that you have been relatively mucus-free for a month. When you do eat something that makes you feel unclean before you plan to fast, be sure to wait several hours, do an enema, take a day to eat mucuslessly if necessary, and then start your fast. If you end up feeling hungry then eat some kind of raw mucus-broom combination salad or salad with steamed mucus-free vegetables.
I personally recommend juice fasting over water fasting, especially in the beginning. Ehret’s prescription is to drink as much juice as you want throughout the day (within reason, not more than a couple quarts). Coupling this with lemon juice enemas (details about these are in Spira Speaks) can take the cleansing to the next level. Lemon water or lemon juice can be explored for an even more intense cleansing.

Although I do not like to preplan days, you could do two or three days on fruit juice and two or three days on sub-acid fruits like grapes/blackberries. I find grape juice and whole grape fasting to one of the best given the quality of produce available. Orange juice fasts are nice and feel quite different from sub-acid, but it has become harder and harder to find good quality, non-acidic, tree-ripened oranges.
Intermittent Fasting Diet: Ehret’s 2 to 3 day Fasting Protocol
In any event, I think that you can begin to experiment with some shorter fasts without any problems. To me, it makes sense to do shorter fasts more often in the beginning to really develop a mastery of getting into and out of a fast. The key is just to not go too long where you lose control. That is really the reason why I emphasize transition. Too many people try to over extend themselves too soon and end up doing the back and forth yo-yo thing you are talking about. 21 day water or lemon juice fasts followed by an insatiable appetite for mucus is not going to help cleanse and regenerate anything. This ‘master cleanse’ model really does not provide a sustainable detox process and can be harmful when people do not know anything about the transition diet. There should be no “aging effect” if one is cleansing and transitioning properly. No need to try anything extreme in this realm. Fasting must be understood, respected, and practiced gracefully to gain the greatest results.
Avoid Cooked Vegetables and Mucuslean
As far as the cooked vegetables, you would not want them too close to breaking the fast unless you did have a crazy craving for something worse. Yet, I would rather see folks eat some steamed greens and broccoli with a raw salad than go deeper into the raw mucus-forming foods like avocados or nuts. Especially following a fast.
There is much more to be said on the subject of fasting properly, but review Rational Fasting and the Mucusless Diet Healing System first, and you should be ready to get started.
