Get Rid of Mucus
Arnold Ehret’s Mucusless Diet Healing System is the quintessential book on learning how to safely and effectively get rid of mucus from your diet and body.
The following discussion is an excerpt from a recent interview of Prof. Spira about Arnold Ehret and the Mucusless Diet Healing System by Marcus Vinícius Brasil for the Brazilian technology magazine INFO (info.abril.com.br) that took place on March 26, 2015. Marcus asks Spira about the science of eliminating mucus from the body:
Marcus Vinícius Brasil’s Question:
Do you think that any of the physiological insights presented in the original Mucusless Diet Healing System book should be submitted to some kind of revision in the context of the medical framework of the present days? It comes to my mind, for example, the matter of the white globules in our blood. I recall that in his books Ehret writes that these are signs of disease, and not protective cells. Do you think this still stands?
Prof. Spira’s Response:
These are some of the things that I examine in my annotated version of the Mucusless Diet entitled Prof. Arnold Ehret’s Mucusless Diet Healing System: Annotated, Revised, and Edited by Prof. Spira. Historically, scholars have endeavored to create annotated and revised versions of important works of literature and sacred texts. There are a number of things that people tend to misunderstand or skip over entirely when they first read Ehret’s work. Some people are put off by some of its old-fashioned terminology. In my edition I sought to update some of these issues and make Ehret’s information on how to get rid of mucus and transform one’s physiology more accessible to 21st century audiences.
I’ve had many long-time Ehret fans read my edition, and they’ve told people who have never been exposed to Ehret’s work before to read my edition first. Much of these issues are elaborated even further in my book Spira Speaks: Dialogs and Essays on the Mucusless Diet Healing System.
How To Frame the Mucusless Diet
Part of what I do in the Annotated Mucusless Diet is to create a framework in which to read Ehret’s work in the 21st century. Throughout the book, Ehret’s role shifts from dietitian, to philosopher, to back-to-nature advocate, to scientist, to sociologist, to critic, and so on.
Some people have trouble reading a book and objectively examining it’s content, thinking through it’s philosophical claims, and also experimenting with the suggested practices offered. A reader of Ehret’s work need not agree with or understand all of his philosophies to be able to benefit from and practice THE SYSTEM. I don’t agree with everything in Ehret’s writings, which I address in the annotated version, but this does not prevent me from engaging with Ehret’s work.
With that said, many people tend to empirically realize how profound some of Ehret’s more controversial philosophical claims are after having practiced the mucusless diet for some time. Certain things do not really make sense until you practice the diet for a while, but if you are open-minded such questions should not hold you back from using the transitional methodology to transform your physiology.
Science vs. Art
As far as updating Ehret’s work within the context of medical science, I think that would be problematic and unnecessary at this time. We need to raise the questions and begin dialogues, but it should be done through a framework based firmly in Ehret’s methods and philosophies. Inspired by Ehret’s work, I call for the reevaluation of the foundation on which Western dietetic theory and medical science is based. Ehret revealed some fundamental flaws that existed from the beginning of these disciplines, and we must go back to the beginning and reevaluate.
Who created these theories and why? What were the historical contexts in which modern nutritional theories were based? Ehret’s “New Physiology” is only the beginning of this process of interrogation. In the spirit of Thomas Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, a profound paradigm shift would need to happen in order to reevaluate Ehret’s work from the vantage point of modern medical science.
There is much work that needs to be done and questions to be answered, but I do not think it is going to come from the medical or mainstream dietetic communities. I think that the revolutionary understanding is going to come from brilliant people who practice the system and become living examples of the artistry of the transition diet.
Understanding Mucusless Diet as an Art Form
Understanding the practice of the diet as an art form is something that I often talk about. Scientists can try to explain the physics behind playing a musical instrument, but they cannot teach you how to become a master musical performer.
Scientists can show you how to build an atomic bomb, but may not necessarily have the moral fortitude, philosophical consciousness, or political power needed to dismantle them.
The principles of healing could be examined broadly as a science, but the individuality of of healing is an art. No two people can fast or transition the same, and no two people have the same life experiences or access to resources.
From a historical context, Ehret’s use of the term “science” in the subtitle “Scientific Method of Eating Your Way to Health” to be that of “empirical science,” insofar as one learns “knowledge” through experience.
Yet, as a thinker, philosopher, and “scientist,” Ehret’s work may be situated among what I would describe as the artist/philosopher/scientist’/engineer, which was the origin of what is viewed as science today. Historically, these fields were not islands, but integrated through people like Galileo, Isaac Newton, Leonardo da Vinci, etc. (See “science” on Wikipedia for more).
Once upon a time, the term “science” was used interchangeably with “philosophy.” Over the past 120 years, much of the artistry and philosophical aspirations to achieve “wisdom” (philos) through knowledge (scientia) has taken the form of a strict system of methods for measuring, analyzing, and explaining phenomena.
Within the current system, only a small number of privileged people have the authority to challenge and contribute to an ‘academic’ scientific discourse and have access to the laboratories and funding necessary to conduct relevant research studies. From my reading of Ehret’s work, this is not the context in which he uses the word “science.”
He uses it in its historical context, signifying an omnipotent system of healing. True knowledge of this system may only be gleaned through experience, which is an older understanding of science.
Ehret says that “Nature, alone, is the teacher of a standard science of truth (Mucusless Diet Healing System).” He adds that “Whatever cannot be seen—conceived at once—through simple reasoning is humbug, and not science!”
Of course I love 21st century science and see some important discoveries in certain fields of study. And I would love to see mucusless diet practitioners have access to the same resources as the academic “scientists” who are being given millions of dollars to figure out how to mass produce lab-grown beef (pus).
It would be great to have progressive research done by chemists and physicists who are also expert practitioners of Ehret’s transition diet. But until then, we must come to master the healing arts empirically, and pass on our acquired wisdom to others in need. I find that this is best done by emphasizing and teaching the artistic and philosophical nature of Ehret’s healing system.
Marcus Vinícius Brasil’s Question:
Great, Prof. Spira. Thank you, very much for the answers. Do you have anything else you would like to add?
Prof. Spira’s Response:
I’d like to thank your for the opportunity to discuss Ehret’s legacy and the Mucusless Diet Healing System. This is a great time for the growth of our plant-based mucus-free community. We are currently working on translating some of our mucus-free publications into Spanish, German, and Portuguese. I’ve been getting a lot of messages lately from Spanish and Portuguese brothers and sisters expressing interest in Ehret’s work, and I’m looking forward to spread our knowledge with these communities.
It is wonderful to see people around the world becoming more interested in Ehret’s great works. I encourage everyone to examine Ehret’s Mucusless Diet Healing System and try the methods for themselves. Keep an open mind and take a journey into higher levels of healing and consciousness.
Peace, Love, and Breath!
